BACKGROUND: Using hydrogen peroxide (HP) for tooth bleaching may induce various side effects. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a promising solution. We aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of tooth bleaching using high-concentration HP with CAP with conventional in-office bleaching. METHODS: Fifty-one discolored extracted human teeth were assigned to three groups: Group 1 (light-emitting diode with 35% HP), Group 2 (CAP with 35% HP), and Group 3 (only CAP). Bleaching was conducted over three sessions for a total of 20 min. The bleaching effect was evaluated based on the changes in color (ΔE00 and WID) and lightness (ΔL and ΔG). Safety was assessed by examining the dark areas on the enamel and monitoring the pulp chamber temperature. The study analyzed how different bleaching methods and durations affected ΔE00 and ΔWID using repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). The Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used for ΔL and dark areas, and one-way ANOVA for ΔG after 20 min of bleaching. RESULTS: The ΔE00 and WID demonstrated an interaction based on the bleaching method and time, with Group 1 exhibiting the highest ΔE00 and WID at all treatment times (p < 0.001). ΔL* and ΔG did not differ significantly between Groups 1 and 2 (p = 0.056 and 0.062, respectively) and were lowest in Group 3 (p < 0.001). Group 1 exhibited the darkest areas and highest pulp chamber temperatures (p < 0.001). Group 1 exhibited statistically significant color changes. Group 2 demonstrated similar effects, but with enhanced safety profiles. CONCLUSIONS: Group 2, although displaying a slightly less pronounced color change compared with Group 1, achieved a color alteration readily discernible to the naked eye. This suggests that CAP with 35% HP could be an interesting area for further investigation as an alternative to traditional in-office bleaching methods.

BACKGROUND: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the remineralizing efficacy of calcium sucrose phosphate (CaSP) for the treatment of white spot lesions (WSLs) that commonly occur after orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances using various randomized controlled trials (RCTs) available in the literature to date. HIGHLIGHTS: Adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes (PRISMA) guidelines, RCTs that assessed the efficacious remineralizing potential of CaSP on WSLs and demineralized enamel and compared it with either no intervention or other remineralizing agents were selected. The methodological rigor of the included studies was subjected to the Risk of Bias tool-2 (ROB-2) and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) tools. Furthermore, a Begg's Funnel Plot was used to assess publication bias. The qualitative analysis encompassed a corpus of 36 studies. The remineralization potential of CaSP was investigated using an array of parameters, including surface microhardness, surface morphology, surface roughness, mineral content, and lesion size and depth. Based on the ROB-2 tool, most of the included studies were judged to be high risk, largely attributable to the presence of attrition bias. Using the GRADE framework, the certainty of evidence was determined to be moderate. CONCLUSION: This systematic review reveals that CaSP yields favorable outcomes in terms of increased surface microhardness and calcium-phosphate content, reduced demineralized area and surface roughness, and enhanced surface topography.

BACKGROUND: Endodontic therapy in pediatric dentistry is a challenging procedure, especially for special needs, uncooperative, and very young patients. A new conservative approach which is the non-instrumental endodontic treatment (NIET) has been developed to simplify the management of primary teeth requiring pulpectomy. This review aimed to compare the efficiency of NIET and conventional endodontic treatment in primary teeth. METHODS: Electronic databases including MEDLINE (via PubMed), Cochrane Library (CENTRAL), and Scopus without restrictions on publication year or publication language were searched. Only randomized clinical trials reporting clinical and radiographical outcomes of NIET and conventional pulpectomy on primary teeth were considered eligible. Two reviewers extracted the data according to the PRISMA statement and assessed the bias risk using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and a meta-analysis was performed. RESULTS: From 3322 screened articles, seven articles meeting the inclusion criteria were included. The selected studies included 283 primary molars, of 213 children aged between 3 and 9 years, treated by NIET and conventional pulpectomy, and had follow-up periods ranging from 1 month to tooth exfoliation. Two studies reported good success rates for both the NIET technique and endodontic therapy with no statistically significant difference while three studies showed radiographical significant differences with a low success rate for the NIET technique. Only one study reported better outcomes in the pulpectomy group with statistically significant differences. The quantitative grouping of the included studies showed no significant differences between NIET and conventional endodontic therapy regarding clinical and radiographical success (p value > 0.05). CONCLUSION: No difference between the NIET technique and the conventional endodontic therapy in primary molars requiring pulpectomy could be confirmed. Results of the present review need to be interpreted with caution since the quality of evidence according to the GRADE was considered as moderate to very low. Therefore, additional clinical trials on the NIET technique are recommended.

Purpose: The aim of this work is to conduct a literature review to highlight all the parameters involved in sub-prosthetic radicular fractures of teeth supported by metallic dental core. Materials and Methods: The following research was performed among published studies over the last 10 years in two PubMed/Medline and Scopus and supplemented by manual searching within the bibliographies. The search was restricted to publications in English and French. Results: Out of the 1464 articles initially identified, 18 studies met our inclusion criteria and were subsequently included in the literature review. These consisted of eight Finite Element Analysis Studies, two Retrospective Studies and one Randomized Controlled Trial. The results of this review show that radicular fractures are influenced by several variables, including predisposition, with maxillary premolars and mandibular molars being the most commonly affected teeth. Intracanal preparation can induce crack formation, leading to localized high stress concentrations. Increased ferrule height to 2 mm significantly enhances dental fracture resistance. Using high modulus of elasticity alloys results in nearly complete stress transmission to dentin due to their limited deformability and absorption capacity. The highest fracture resistance is achieved when posts are sealed using resin-modified glass-ionomer cement. Longer posts may be preferable to prevent vertical fractures. Additionally, occlusal factors, through repetitive stresses, contribute to crack propagation from surface defects, a phenomenon termed fatigue fracture. Conclusion: These findings have significant implications. Practitioners should be aware of the predisposition of certain teeth, the importance of preserving the ferrule effect, the choice of root post materials, post Cement Material and the role of occlusal forces in managing and preventing vertical root fractures.

Background This study aimed to compare the radicular dentin thickness in single-rooted maxillary and mandibular anterior and premolar teeth by measuring on four different surfaces (buccal, lingual, mesial, and distal) at three different levels (apical, middle, and coronal). Methods A total of 150 single-rooted human anterior and premolar teeth were included in the present study. The teeth were sectioned at the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ; coronal), 4 mm away from the apex (apical), and the midpoint between these two distances (middle). First, the teeth were divided buccolingually into two parts, and the dentin thickness in the mesial/distal region was measured. Subsequently, both parts were divided again to measure the dentin thickness in the buccal/lingual region. All measurements were recorded, and statistical analysis was performed. Results Apical radicular dentin thickness was significantly less than CEJ (p < 0.001). The maxillary central incisor, maxillary, and mandibular canine exhibited the maximum radicular dentin thickness, whereas the mandibular premolars showed the minimum. Radicular dentin thicknesses on the lingual and buccal surfaces were significantly higher than those on other surfaces (p < 0.001). Conclusion The lowest radicular dentin thickness values were observed in the premolars, especially on mesial and distal surfaces. Considering these areas as danger zones and paying attention during dental procedures are essential to avoid possible complications.

OBJECTIVES: To compare oral adhesive bandages with the classic compression method and evaluate the clinical efficacy of this wound dressing material in improving postoperative comfort, wound healing, and hemostasis in tooth extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was designed as a randomized controlled clinical trial. A total of 120 patients were recruited and randomly assigned to the study group and the control group. In the study group, oral adhesive bandages were used as wound dressing. In the control group, patients bit on cotton balls and gauze, as usual. Hemorrhage, comfort, and healing levels were evaluated at postoperative 1 h, 24 h, and 7 days. The adhesion time of the oral adhesive bandages was also recorded. RESULTS: The average adhesion time of the oral adhesive bandages was 26.6 h. At postoperative 1 and 24 h, the hemostatic levels of the oral adhesive bandage group were significantly higher than those of the control group. The oral adhesive bandage group also reported significantly higher comfort scores than the control group. Both groups had similar healing levels and side effects. But the mean score for wound healing was slightly higher in the oral adhesive bandage group. CONCLUSIONS: Oral adhesive bandages were more effective than cotton balls and gauze in providing hemostatic and comfort effects on extraction wounds. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Oral adhesive bandages possess clinical value in the management of extraction wounds.

Caries is a partially heritable disease, raising the possibility that a polygenic score (PS, a summary of an individual's genetic propensity for disease) might be a useful tool for risk assessment. To date, PS for some diseases have shown clinical utility, although no PS for caries has been evaluated. The objective of the study was to test whether a PS for caries is associated with disease experience or increment in a cohort of Swedish adults. A genome-wide PS for caries was trained using the results of a published genome-wide association meta-analysis and constructed in an independent cohort of 15,460 Swedish adults. Electronic dental records from the Swedish Quality Registry for Caries and Periodontitis (SKaPa) were used to compute the decayed, missing, and filled tooth surfaces (DMFS) index and the number of remaining teeth. The performance of the PS was evaluated by testing the association between the PS and DMFS at a single dental examination, as well as between the PS and the rate of change in DMFS. Participants in the highest and lowest deciles of PS had a mean DMFS of 63.5 and 46.3, respectively. A regression analysis confirmed this association where a 1 standard deviation increase in PS was associated with approximately 4-unit higher DMFS (P < 2 × 10-16). Participants with the highest decile of PS also had greater change in DMFS during follow-up. Results were robust to sensitivity analysis, which adjusted for age, age squared, sex, and the first 20 genetic principal components. Mediation analysis suggested that tooth loss was a strong mediating factor in the association between PS and DMFS but also supported a direct genetic effect on caries. In this cohort, there are clinically meaningful differences in DMFS between participants with high and low PS for caries. The results highlight the potential role of genomic data in improving caries risk assessment.

Zirconia crown has been widely used in the field of prosthodontics. Traditional zirconia exhibits excellent mechanical properties but lacks translucency. The introduction of transparent zirconia significantly enhances its aesthetic performance. In clinical applications, factors affecting the aesthetic results of full zirconia crown should be comprehensively considered, and the most suitable restoration should be chosen. Additionally, clinicians need to design appropriate tooth preparation dimensions and methods based on an individual patient's actual situation. During the clinical bonding process of zirconia, proper surface treatment of the tooth and restoration is essential. The selection of suitable adhesives is crucial for achieving optimal bonding strength and aesthetics.

BACKGROUND: Digitalizing oral health data through an app can help manage the extensive data obtained through oral health surveys. The Tooth Memo app collects data from oral health surveys and personal health information. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the evaluate the time efficiency, reliability, and user satisfaction of the Tooth Memo app. METHODS: There are 2 sections in the Tooth Memo app: oral health survey and personal oral health record. For the oral health survey section of the Tooth Memo app, different data entry methods were compared and user satisfaction was evaluated. Fifth-year dental students had access to the oral health survey section in the Tooth Memo app during their clinical work. The time required for data entry, analysis, and summary of oral health survey data by 3 methods, that is, pen-and-paper (manual), Tooth Memo app on iOS device, and Tooth Memo app on Android device were compared among 3 data recorders who entered patients' information on decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth (DMFT) index and community periodontal index (CPI), which were read aloud from the database of 103 patients by another dental personnel. The interobserver reliability of the 3 different data-entering procedures was evaluated by percent disagreement and kappa statistic values. Laypeople had access to the personal oral health record section of this app, and their satisfaction was evaluated through a Likert scale questionnaire. The satisfaction assessments for both sections of the Tooth Memo app involved the same set of questions on the app design, usage, and overall satisfaction. RESULTS: Of the 103 dental records on DMFT and CPI, 5.2% (177/3399) data points were missing in the manual data entries, but no data on tooth status were missing in the Android and iOS methods. Complete CPI information was provided by all 3 methods. Transferring data from paper to computer took an average of 55 seconds per case. The manual method required 182 minutes more than the iOS or Android methods to clean the missing data and transfer and analyze the tooth status data of 103 patients. The users, that is, 109 fifth-year dental students and 134 laypeople, expressed high satisfaction with using the Tooth Memo app. The overall satisfaction with the oral health survey ranged between 3 and 10, with an average (SD) of 7.86 (1.46). The overall satisfaction with the personal oral health record ranged between 4 and 10, with an average (SD) of 8.09 (1.28). CONCLUSIONS: The Tooth Memo app was more efficacious than manual data entry for collecting data of oral health surveys. Dental personnel as well as general users reported high satisfaction when using this app.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects of material type and thickness on force generation and distribution by aligners. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty aligners were divided into six groups (n = 10): one group with a thickness of 0.89 mm using Zendura Viva (Multi-layer), four groups with a thickness of 0.75 mm using Zendura FLX (Multi-layer), CA Pro (Multi-layer), Zendura (Single-layer), and Duran (Single-layer) sheets, and one group with a thickness of 0.50 mm using Duran sheets. Force measurements were conducted using Fuji® pressure-sensitive films. RESULTS: The lowest force values, both active and passive, were recorded for the multi-layered sheets: CA Pro (83.1 N, 50.5 N), Zendura FLX (88.9 N, 60.7 N), and Zendura Viva (92.5 N, 68.5 N). Conversely, the highest values were recorded for the single-layered sheets: Duran (131.9 N, 71.8 N) and Zendura (149.7 N, 89.8 N). The highest force was recorded at the middle third of the aligner, followed by the incisal third, and then the cervical third. The net force between the incisal and cervical thirds (FI-FC) showed insignificant difference across different materials. However, when comparing the incisal and middle thirds, the net force (FI-FM) was higher with single-layered materials. Both overall force and net force (FI-FM) were significantly higher with 0.75 mm compared to those with a thickness of 0.50 mm. CONCLUSIONS: Multi-layered aligner materials exert lower forces compared to their single-layered counterparts. Additionally, increased thickness in aligners results in enhanced retention and greater force generation. For effective bodily tooth movement, thicker and single-layered rigid materials are preferred. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This research provides valuable insights into the biomechanics of orthodontic aligners, which could have significant clinical implications for orthodontists. Orthodontists might use this information to more effectively tailor aligner treatments, considering the specific tooth movement required for each individual patient. In light of these findings, an exchangeable protocol for aligner treatment is suggested, which however needs to be proven clinically. This protocol proposes alternating between multi-layered and single-layered materials within the same treatment phase. This strategy is suggested to optimize treatment outcomes, particularly when planning for a bodily tooth movement.

Research on the connection between endodontic therapy and orthodontics is lacking. This overview of the literature synthesizes the findings from the fields of orthodontics and endodontics and explains how they are related. Beginning with the diagnosis, treating the patient at the appropriate time, moving endodontically treated teeth and traumatized teeth, resorbing roots by orthodontic mechanics, and managing traumatized teeth with orthodontic therapy. Multiple electronic databases were utilized including (PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science) to perform manual literature searches. A total of 31 articles were reviewed and summarized in this paper in keywords like "Endodontically Treated Teeth and Orthodontic Treatment," "Endodontically Treated Tooth and Orthodontic Movement," "Orthodontic Treatment in RCT Teeth," "Root Canal Treatment with Orthodontic Movement," "Trauma with Orthodontic Movement," "Orthodontic and Endodontic." Orthodontic treatment of endodontically treated and traumatized teeth is a subject of controversy. The lack of research on the topic makes it a hard decision to make when to treat these teeth. Especially given that both orthodontic and endodontic treatments have multiple consequences on each other's outcomes. Thus, it is crucial for clinicians to understand how they integrate and have a guideline to refer to during decision-making. Successful orthodontic tooth movement could be carried out immediately after endodontic treatment. However, traumatized teeth need a follow-up period before initiating orthodontic movement, which ranges from three months to 12 months depending on the type of trauma and severity. Careful radiographic and clinical follow-up should be done during the healing period. Collaborative teamwork is important between orthodontists and endodontists for the success of treatment, and to achieve satisfactory outcomes.

Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely employed in modern dentistry, and tooth segmentation constitutes an integral part of the digital workflow based on these imaging data. Previous methodologies rely heavily on manual segmentation and are time-consuming and labor-intensive in clinical practice. Recently, with advancements in computer vision technology, scholars have conducted in-depth research, proposing various fast and accurate tooth segmentation methods. In this review, we review 55 articles in this field and discuss the effectiveness, advantages, and disadvantages of each approach. In addition to simple classification and discussion, this review aims to reveal how tooth segmentation methods can be improved by the application and refinement of existing image segmentation algorithms to solve problems such as irregular morphology and fuzzy boundaries of teeth. It is assumed that with the optimization of these methods, manual operation will be reduced, and greater accuracy and robustness in tooth segmentation will be achieved. Finally, we highlight the challenges that still exist in this field and provide prospects for future directions.

Background: It is unclear whether prolonged periods of training can be well tolerated. In Charcot-Marie Tooth disease (CMT). We report the effects of an 8-month, adapted motor activity (AMA) program in a 16-years-old CMT1A male patient. The program included strength, mobility, and balance training (two sessions per week, 1 h per session). Measures: Walking ability and walking velocity (Six-Minute Walking Test-6MWT, Ten Meters Walking Test-10 mW T), balance (Y-Balance Test-YBT, Berg Balance Scale-BBS), functional mobility (Short Physical Performance Battery-Short physical performance battery), fatigue (Checklist Individual strength questionnaire - CIS20R), health and quality of life (Short Form Health Survey 36 questionnaire-SF-36) were evaluated in three moments: before (T0), after 5 (T1) and 8 (T2) months of adapted motor activity. Dorsal and plantar foot flexion strength (Maximal Voluntary Contraction-maximum voluntary contraction) and neuromuscular functions (Electromyography-sEMG, interpolated twitch technique-ITT) were measured at T1 and T2. Results: Relative to T0, an amelioration of walking ability (6MWT, +9,3%) and balance (with improvements on Y-balance composite normalized mean reach of the right and left limb of 15,3% and 8,5%, respectively) was appreciable. Relative to T1, an increase in foot strength in three out of four movements (right plantar flexion, +39,3%, left plantar flexion, +22,7%, left dorsal flexion, 11,5%) was observed. Concerning voluntary muscle activation, a greater recruitment in the left, unlike right, medial gastrocnemius was observed. Conclusion: Results suggest the safety of an 8-month AMA program in a young patient affected by CMT1A.

Background: Gas expansion in body cavities due to pressure changes at high altitudes can cause barodontalgia. This condition may compromise flight safety. Aim: To investigate relationships among barodontalgia awareness, dental visit frequency, and barodontalgia prevalence in civilian and military pilots operating at high altitudes. Materials and Methods: Civilian pilots from Turkish Airlines and military pilots from the Turkish Air Force, flying between November 2022 and January 2023, participated in this study. A 20-question survey was administered to 750 pilots, covering topics such as barodontalgia awareness, dental visit frequency, breaks after dental treatments, in-flight pain, and pain type and severity. The voluntary surveys were distributed by email. Results: Of the 750 pilots, 526 completed the survey; 61% were aware of barodontalgia, and 81% of pilots who had experienced it reported pain at altitudes <2000 feet. The study revealed higher barodontalgia awareness among pilots who had experienced it, with the highest prevalence among jet pilots. Pilots with barodontalgia also showed a higher frequency of dental visits (p < 0.001). Additionally, this group reported more frequent interruption of flight due to dental treatment (IFDT), more problems experienced in flights after treatment (PFAT), and higher instances of bruxism or teeth clenching during flight, suggesting stress and anxiety (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Barodontalgia, a type of pain linked to stress, significantly impacts pilot performance, and can threaten flight safety, even at lower altitudes. Thus, there is a need to educate pilots about stress management, barodontalgia awareness, and the importance of regular dental check-ups.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Tooth avulsion and delayed replantation may cause inflammatory responses and root resorption of the tooth. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of a doxycycline-loaded nitric oxide-releasing nanomatrix (DN) gel on the delayed replantation of avulsed rat teeth, with a focus on assessing the gel's potential to promote regeneration and inhibit complications associated with the replantation process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four right maxillary first molars from male Sprague-Dawley rats were atraumatically extracted using sterile extraction forceps. The molars were dried for 1 h at room temperature (approximately 23 °C) and divided into four groups according to the root conditioning methods after extra-alveolar 60-min drying: Group 1, no root conditioning treatment prior to replantation; Group 2, soaking in 2% NaF solution for 5 min before replantation; Group 3, 5-min soaking in NO gel and injection of the gel into the alveolar socket; Group 4, 5-min soaking in DN gel and injection of the gel into the alveolar socket before replantation. The animals were euthanized four weeks after the operation and the specimens were evaluated histologically. RESULTS: The use of NO gel alone showed better anti-inflammatory and periodontal effects than the control group, but it did not show a significant effect compared to the group using NaF. When using NO gel loaded with doxycycline, it showed a significant anti-inflammatory effect compared to the control group and showed a similar inhibitory effect to the group using NaF. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limits of this study, in delayed replantation situations, the control of inflammatory resorption and replacement resorption is an important factor for achieving a better prognosis of replanted teeth. Root surface treatment with DN gel decreased root resorption after delayed replantation.

Poor oral health is an important concern for athletes, as it can affect both general health and athletic performance. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of activity in chlorinated water on oral health in elite swimmers compared to non-swimming athletes. This cross-sectional study included 101 swimmers and 100 other athletes aged 13-26 years with a minimum training intensity of five hours per week (for at least the preceding two years). Oral health was assessed using the approximal plaque index (API) and the decayed/missing/filled teeth (DMFT) index. A DIAGNOcam was used to detect caries. Results show that swimmers were younger (15 years vs. 18 years), were more likely to be female (54% vs. 17%), and had a lower body mass index (20.1 kg/m2 vs. 21.9 kg/m2) and a lower juice consumption (9% vs. 24%). Non-swimmers had significantly more decayed, missing, or filled teeth due to caries and plaque. In conclusion, by comparing elite swimmers and athletes competing in different sports, we have shown that competitive swimmers have a lower incidence of dental caries and plaque. Further research is needed to test our findings and to understand this relationship in greater detail.

Soft drinks may have a deleterious effect on dental health due to a high titratable acidity and a low pH that could be sufficient to induce tooth demineralization. The use of oral care products immediately after acidic challenge may diminish the erosive potential of soft drinks. We assessed the effect of oral care foams and a spray on salivary pH changes after exposure to Coca-Cola® in young adults. Thirty-three consenting eligible patients were recruited in this double-blind, randomized, crossover study performed in six visits. Baseline examination included unstimulated salivary flow rate, stimulated salivary buffer capacity, and the simplified oral hygiene index (OHI-S) assessment. Salivary pH and time for pH recovery were registered after exposure to Coca-Cola® alone or that followed by the application of each of the studied products (an oral foam containing hydroxyapatite and probiotics, an oral foam containing amino fluoride, an alkaline oral spray, and tap water). Thirty-two patients completed the entire study protocol and were included in the final analysis. The mean minimum salivary pH and the mean oral clearance rate after rinsing with Coca-Cola® were 6.3 and 27 min, respectively. Further rinsing with any one of the tested solutions, including tap water, resulted in a significant improvement in these parameters. When the pH curves were plotted, the oral care products demonstrated a lower area under the curve that differed significantly from the area under the curve for Coca-Cola®; tap water did not differ significantly from Coca-Cola® and oral care products. Minimum salivary pH correlated positively with salivary buffer capacity and salivation rate, while salivary clearance correlated with OHI-S plaque scores. In conclusion, the effect of oral care foams and a spray on minimum salivary pH and salivary clearance after exposure to Coca-Cola® did not differ significantly among the tested products and tap water. Dental anatomy education is traditionally structured into theoretical and practical modules to foster both cognitive and psychomotor development. The theoretical module typically involves didactic lectures where educators elucidate dental structures using visual aids. In contrast, practical modules utilize three-dimensional illustrations, extracted and plastic teeth, and tooth carving exercises on wax or soap blocks, chosen for their cost, ease of handling, and fidelity in replication. However, the efficacy of these traditional methods is increasingly questioned. The criticism in this concern is that oversized carving materials may distort students' understanding of anatomical proportions, potentially affecting the development of necessary skills for clinical practice. Lecture-driven instruction, on the other hand, is also criticized for its limitations in fostering interactive learning, resulting in a gap between pre-clinical instruction and practical patient care. In this study, we review the various educational strategies that have emerged to enhance traditional dental anatomy pedagogy by describing the effectiveness of conventional didactic lectures, wax carving exercises, the use of real and artificial teeth, the flipped classroom model, and e-learning tools. Our review aims to assess each method's contribution to improving clinical applicability and educational outcomes in dental anatomy, with a focus on developing pedagogical frameworks that align with contemporary educational needs and the evolving landscape of dental practice. We suggest that the optimal approach for teaching tooth morphology would be to integrate the digital benefits of the flipped classroom model with the practical, hands-on experience of using extracted human teeth. To address the challenges presented by this integration, the creation and standardization of three-dimensional tooth morphology educational tools, complemented with concise instructional videos for a flipped classroom setting, appears to be a highly effective strategy.

Vertebrate mineralized tissues, present in bones, teeth and scales, have complex 3D hierarchical structures. As more of these tissues are characterized in 3D using mainly FIB SEM at a resolution that reveals the mineralized collagen fibrils and their organization into collagen fibril bundles, highly complex and diverse structures are being revealed. In this perspective we propose an approach to analyzing these tissues based on the presence of modular structures: material textures, pore shapes and sizes, as well as extents of mineralization. This modular approach is complimentary to the widely used hierarchical approach for describing these mineralized tissues. We present a series of case studies that show how some of the same structural modules can be found in different mineralized tissues, including in bone, dentin and scales. The organizations in 3D of the various structural modules in different tissues may differ. This approach facilitates the framing of basic questions such as: are the spatial relations between modular structures the same or similar in different mineralized tissues? Do tissues with similar sets of modules carry out similar functions or can similar functions be carried out using a different set of modular structures? Do mineralized tissues with similar sets of modules have a common developmental or evolutionary pathway? STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: 3D organization studies of diverse vertebrate mineralized tissues are revealing detailed, but often confusing details about the material textures, the arrangements of pores and differences in the extent of mineralization within a tissue. The widely used hierarchical scheme for describing such organizations does not adequately provide a basis for comparing these tissues, or addressing issues such as structural components thought to be characteristic of bone, being present in dermal tissues and so on. The classification scheme we present is based on identifying structural components within a tissue that can then be systematically compared to other vertebrate mineralized tissues. We anticipate that this classification approach will provide insights into structure-function relations, as well as the evolution of these tissues.
